The Handsome Man
This is another ‘autobiographical’ story showing how it felt for Peter to be unable to speak and gives a simple insight into how he learned to understand words and language.
It tells of discovering how to speak through Facilitated Communication and teaching his mother to be a facilitator as “he held her hand and made her listen to the sounds on his finger.”
It also touches on how being able to communicate in this way helped him to grow into a man able to function more independently in society.
Once there was a very handsome man, who lived on a big farm. He needed only one thing in his life. He needed to talk, even just a little bit.
Sometimes he was sad, but he knew inside he was not stupid. Everyday, he would sing and say, “You will speak one day, handsome man.”
